Understanding Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion

At NY Spine & Orthopedic, we specialize in a range of advanced spine surgeries, including Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF). This procedure is performed to alleviate spinal cord or nerve root pressure caused by herniated discs or bone spurs in the cervical spine. By removing the damaged disc and fusing the adjacent vertebrae, ACDF aims to restore stability and relieve pain in the neck and arms.

When to Consider ACDF

ACDF may be recommended when non-surgical treatments such as medication, physical therapy, or injections fail to alleviate symptoms. Common indicators for this surgery include:

  • Persistent neck pain
  • Radiating pain into the shoulders, arms, or hands
  • Numbness or tingling in the extremities
  • Weakness in the arms or hands
  • Difficulty with fine motor skills

The ACDF Procedure

The ACDF surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and involves the following steps:

  1. Incision: A small incision is made in the front of the neck to access the cervical spine.
  2. Disc Removal: The damaged disc is carefully removed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots.
  3. Bone Grafting: A bone graft is placed in the space where the disc was removed. This graft can be sourced from the patient’s own bone (autograft) or a donor (allograft), or it may be a synthetic material.
  4. Fusion: The graft and adjacent vertebrae are stabilized with metal plates and screws to promote fusion.
  5. Closure: The incision is closed with sutures or surgical glue.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Post-surgery, patients are closely monitored and may stay in the hospital for one to two days. Recovery includes a combination of rest, physical therapy, and gradual return to normal activities. The fusion process can take several months, during which the patient may need to wear a cervical collar or brace for added support.

Benefits of ACDF

The primary benefits of ACDF include:

  • Pain relief in the neck and arms
  • Improved mobility and function
  • Stabilization of the cervical spine
  • Prevention of further spinal degeneration
